Twin Cities nurses walked the picket lines Thursday, including those who work at North Memorial Health Hospital, a Level 1 trauma center in Robbinsdale.

Nurses are pushing for a new collective bargaining agreement. Their main concern is workplace safety. One of those marching was Sen. Chris Eaton, DFL-Brooklyn Center, who is also a nurse.

“Nurses just aren’t safe on the job anymore,” Eaton said. “They’re getting injured. They’re getting assaulted and something needs to be done whether it’s increased staffing or putting more security in the units.”

“There’s a lot more violence in here than you would think,” said Barb Warren-Bloms, a nurse at North Memorial Health. “We’ve had to confiscate guns and knives out of patients and visitors bags.”

Hospital Hopeful of New Contract “Soon”
The Minnesota Nurses Association estimates that 300 employees joined the picket line. They were vocal about getting better benefits, extra staffing and higher pay.

But a key question remains for nurses is whether management is listening.

“They’re saying that they don’t have the money to put in toward the things that we think we need,” Warren-Bloms said, “like staffing, and education and workplace violence.”

Hospital officials declined an on-camera interview request, but gave CCX News an emailed response that said “they have been negotiating with the nurses union since March.” They are hopeful both sides can agree on a new contract “soon.”

The nurses existing collective bargaining agreement expires June 1. However, officials with the Minnesota Nurses Association say there will be no strike as long as negotiations continue.

Preserving your favorite piece of audio equipment is easier said than done. That’s especially true in a world that’s running low on technicians to fix decades-old stereo receivers. But in New Hope there’s a place that’s not only unique to the Twin Cities, there’s hardly one like it in the entire country.

Vintage Electronics Meet Their Fixer
At Alex Audio, Video and Computer Service, music comes back to life. More specifically, vintage electronics are revived. Owner Alex Samuels specializes in fixing stereo receivers with brand names like Marantz, Pioneer, Sansui and Harman Kardon. The business also fixes turntables, subwoofers and even a few select brands of television.

“A lot of people love this stuff and they sound very good,” said Samuels. “Very often it’s made of quality better, too.”

Samuels, 68, emigrated from Russia and has spent a lifetime repairing electronics.

“It’s passion. You have to be constantly informed or else. Or you’re out,” he said.

A Mind for Manuels
Through his work Samuels acquired an appreciation for precision.

“Alex’s mind is calculating constantly. He brings home a schematic everyday of his life. He always has,” said Sara Samuels, Alex’s wife and business partner.

Samuels has shelves upon shelves of manuels that he uses to fix vintage equipment. The manuels help tackle tedious work. He must find parts, repair parts and pull out parts. And he keeps track of it all.

“I think he is so extreme in how he runs things and he always has been,” said Sara Samuels. “He taught me a lot of that when I came into this business.”

One order is a big process. He gets roughly two to three a day. That includes many electronics repairs shipped to the New Hope store from across the country. It’s a sign of a lost art and an appreciation for what he does.

“A lot of customers say ‘please, don’t leave us. Please don’t leave us,'” Sara said.

For now, Alex Samuels continues to plug away making something old, sound as good as new.

“We like to make them sound good and make customer happy and we’d be happy,” he said.

If you’re on the fence about whether to repair older electronics, Samuels says look on Ebay to see what units like it are going for. Some vintage units sell for up to $2,500. The cost of repairs depends on the type of fix, but typically range from $160 to $250.

Park Center Alumnus Mostafa Sarim contracted the flu and died in January 23, 2018 at age 41.

Following Sarim’s death, his family established the Moe123 Scholarship Fund for students in the Osseo Area School District.

Saturday would have been his 43rd birthday, but instead of mourning, the Sarim family is inviting people to a community picnic.

“We’re just trying to get the word out about who we are and what we’re trying to do in the community and everybody’s more than welcome to come,” said Seraj Sarim, Mostafa’s brother. “We’ll have hot dogs, hamburgers, Mountain Dew — because that was Mostafa’s favorite drink — and the sun will be out, hopefully.”

The picnic takes place Saturday from 3 to 7 p.m. at West Palmer Park in Brooklyn Center.

Last year, five Park Center seniors each received scholarships worth $5,000 apiece.

City staff have been studying how to recruit and retain good restaurants. Brooklyn Park has more than 100 restaurants and they are also investigating how to better accommodate food trucks.

In March of this year, the Economic Development Authority (EDA) indicated restaurant recruitment and retention as a top priority. At a recent EDA meeting, commissioners learned about what efforts staff have been working on in regards to restaurants. Staff have outlined how to recruit new restaurants, marketing strategies for existing restaurants and financial and technical assistance programs offered to new and existing restaurants.

Another option discussed included how to encourage more food truck opportunities.

“Whether we pilot it this season or look to the future at what food trucks and and should do in Brooklyn Park so we become more food truck friendly as a whole,” says Lisa Jacobson, city council member representing the East district.

The city recently had an event to listen to concerns and suggestions on how to become more food truck friendly.

Staff also indicated that restaurants in Brooklyn Park tend to follow national trends. For example, national chains like Applebees have closed, while quick-casual restaurants like Panera or Chipotle have expanded.

Donna Hageman and Sue Sattler of Brooklyn Park recently spent two weeks in El Paso, Texas. They weren’t on vacation. Instead they were helping refugees at the border with the nonprofit Annunciation House.

Annunciation House helps immigrants who have a sponsor get the things they need to travel where their sponsors live. The ladies helped at the shelter by finding clothing for refugees. They said oftentimes immigrants are painted in a bad light. They hope by sharing their experience they can humanize the people crossing the border to enter into the U.S.

“As far as I am concerned they aren’t criminals,” said Hageman. “They are not drug runners, they are just people who want a better life.”

“They are very hard working at the shelter,” said Sattler. “There are jobs for them to do which they do so willingly. They are responsible for the cooking, the cleaning, any of the jobs around there and they are so willing to do them. They are just great people. That’s one thing that I remember the most.”
